Norma Simonson, age 90, of Hanley Falls, passed away February 14, 2013, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN. Services will be held Monday, February 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls, with burial at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday, February 18, 2013 at the church. Online condolences may be placed at www.sunsetfuneralassociation.com. The Sunset Funeral and Cremation Association of Echo and Wabasso are in charge of the arrangements. Norma Elaine Simonson was born September 5, 1922 to George and Louise (Lemke) Huseman in Alta, IA. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended Glencoe Public Schools after moving with her family to the Glencoe area as a young girl. She graduated from Glencoe High School in 1938 and then attended Teacher's Training in St. Cloud, MN. Norma then taught country school near Glencoe for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Marines on December 8, 1944. She served until her honorable discharge on June 3, 1946. She returned to teaching in Hanley Falls and in Redwood Falls prior to her marriage. On June 10, 1953 Norma married Warren “Gabby” Simonson in Minneapolis, MN, and they made their home in Hanley Falls, MN. She left her teaching career for many years to raise her four daughters. She then returned to teaching as a Title 1 Teacher in Granite Falls, MN, before her retirement in 1985. Norma's faith was very important to her. Her community and church were important to her as well. She was an active member of the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. Norma was an involved member of the Senior Citizens, and the Hanley Falls American Legion/Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, flower gardening, reading and traveling, but especially loved spending time with her daughters and their families. On Thursday, February 14, Norma died at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, MN at the age of 90. Norma is survived by her four daughters, Mary (Roger) Gorham of Elk River, MN, Julie (Rob) Dewey of Andover, MN, Jane (Duane) Morland of Clarkfield, MN and K. D. (Jim) Segale of Roseville, MN; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, Rich Huseman of Gold Canyon, AZ; one sister-in-law, Florence Huseman of Virginia, MN; nieces, nephews and friends. Her husband, Warren, her parents, one brother, Raymond Huseman and two sisters, Verna Schmidt and Dee Meyer, preceded her in death.
