Carol Schlenner, age 80 of Willmar, formerly of Wood Lake, passed away on Tuesday July 29, 2014 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday August 4, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake, MN. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday August 3, 2014 with a prayer service at 5 p.m. at the Sunset Funeral Home in Echo, MN and will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday. Haga was born on January 20, 1934 to Magnus and Dora (Rosetter) Haga in Stony Run Township. She was baptized and later confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church. She graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1953. Carol was united in marriage to Gordon Schlenner at Bergen Lutheran Church on September 13, 1953. After Gordon completed his military duties in Maryland, they moved back to Wood Lake to take over the Schlenner Family Farm where they raised their 3 children, Steve, Wendy (Hoepner) and Tim. Besides helping Gordon with the farming, Carol worked for Dekalb Seed Company as a foreman detasseling corn in the summers. Later on, she went to work for the Echo – Wood Lake School System as a Title One Aide and Librarian for almost 20 years. They moved into Wood Lake in 1992 and she retired in 1996. Carol also worked as an Election Judge and helped out at the Wood Lake fair. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Women’s Society, and Birthday Club. Carol became a widow shortly after retirement and dedicated herself to helping out her children and grandchildren filling in wherever she could. She was known in the community for her lively personality with a ready smile and great sense of humor. Carol was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was also very proud of her Norwegian heritage and had an opportunity to travel to Norway. On Tuesday, July 29, 2014, Carol passed away at the Rice Memorial Medical Center in Willmar, Minnesota at the age of 80 years and 6 months. She is survived by her children, Steve (Deb) Schlenner of Watertown, SD, Wendy (Scott) Hoepner of New London, and Tim (Carla) Schlenner of Wood Lake; eight grandchildren, Matt (Annie) Hoepner of Cold Spring, Heidi (Troy) Thorsten of Foley, Lindsey (Josh) Volkart of Watertown, SD, Ashley (Bob) Schafer of Watertown, SD, Vanessa, Tyson, Colton, and Dustin Schlenner of Wood Lake; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Curt (Sue) Haga, sister, Judy (Jerry) Lane; aunt, Torborg Hoyland, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Magnus and Dora, husband, Gordon in 1996, and an infant daughter in 1959, as well as several other relatives and friends. Blessed be her memory.
