Evelyn Olson

Evelyn Olson, 101, of Canby, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Canby with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be in the Hansonville Cemetery.  The Sunset Funeral & Cremation Association is caring for the family. Evelyn Louise Olson was born March 7, 1916 in Andover, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Louise (Freerks) Hayenga. In 1918, she moved with her parents on the farm and received her education at a country school thru 8th grade.  On September 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Orvin Elmer Olson at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Canby.  To this union three children were born.  The couple lived most of their lives on a farm north of Hendricks.  Tragically, they lost one of their sons, Orlan in an auto accident in 1971.  They then moved to Sioux Falls, SD.  She worked on the farm and for 17 years as a Nurse Aid, which included working at the Hendricks Nursing Home, Bethany Meadows Nursing Home and Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.  She lost her husband Orvin in 1975; she stayed and worked in Sioux Falls until retiring in 1982.  After retiring, she moved to Porter, MN.  In 2001, she moved to Canby and July of 2012 to Sylvan Court Sanford Medical Center in Canby. Evelyn loved spending time with family and friends, and enjoyed baking bread and lefse. Her hobbies were crocheting, embroidery, sewing and making quilts.  She enjoyed doing things with the church ladies groups and loved to read. On Monday, April 10, 2017, Evelyn passed away at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby, Minnesota at the age of 101. She is survived by a son Ronald (Barbara) Olson of Canby; daughter Margaret “Marge” (Darrel) Walters of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren Terry Olson of Canby, Sharlolet (Ray) Alu of WI, Luwayne Olson of Canby, Barry (Gayle) Cole of Madison, SD, Bradley (Brandy) Cole of Gettysburg, SD, Jody (Rick) Ruter of Mesa, AZ and Dana (Lori) Cole of Brandon, SD; eight step grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren, and several step great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Gladys Hayenga of Minneapolis and Rosella Hayenga of St. Cloud; One special niece Janet (Louie) Sherlin of Canby and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Orvin, son Orlan, granddaughter in-law Mary K. Cole, siblings Jennie Elfstrand, Harmka Henrickson, Ethel Hayenga, Tena Ditleson, Laura Johnson, Martha Walker, Herman Hayenga, Johnnie Hayenga, Eddie Hayenga, Louise Tschudi and Mildred Hayenga.
